Important Elements Of A Disability Policy
If you’re interested in obtaining income protection through disability insurance, make sure you know the details about the following:
- Definition of Disability: As a physician is it vital that you have a policy that is True Own Occupation. This means if you cannot do your job duties as a physician due to illness or injury within your specialty, you are disabled even if you can work doing something else.
- Benefit Amount: Ideally, you would insure your full replacement value of your earnings. Meaning, if you couldn’t work as a physician due to a disability you would have the payment close to your after taxed income prior to the disability. This is typically between 45-60% of income depending on your earnings.
- Benefit Period: The length of time your benefits are payable for. This is typically either a length of time (2/5/10 years) or to a certain age (age 62/65/67/70).
- Elimination Period: The length of time between the illness or injury and when the disability payments begin. This is often 90 or 180 days, but could be as much as 720 days.
- Partial Disability Rider: Most disabilities are not permanent in nature but could prevent you from working normally for a period. A partial disability rider will pay based on the percentage of income that you lost as long as your income declines at least 15-20% due to the injury or illness.
- Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA): Provides an increase in benefit to help keep pace with inflation if you’re disabled for longer than a year.
